Christian Sacred Art

An ICON is a religious object, done in symbolic language, it's aim is Holy. The word Religion from Latin Re-ligare, means Reunited. Reuniting the broken connection of fallen man with God.
One thread that unites man with God is the ICON.
Christian sacred art, beginning in the first century, flourished in fourth century AD.
One needs to look at icons not as identifying God, but as a symbol, which provides spiritual unity in one's approach to God; a penetration into the supernatural world through the object of the material world.
The icon is a window into another world. It reflects arttistic and religious knowledge and development of the soul. The 'writing' of icon, instead of 'painting' (special terminology, according to the icon's canon), is a spiritual discipline; more akin to a meditation, contemplation and prayer.
The icon reveals two dimensions of reality: the outer and inner, therefore you see this image as a 2D, instead of a 3D image. Nothing of itself is to be revealed or expessed as in other forms of art. Here there is no creativity in the sense of imagination. Every detail in an icon (from the preparation of wood, materials, colors, varnish) has a liturgical meaning. There are no random elements in the icon - everything - every stroke, every color is placed there with purpose and meaning.
There are two ways of looking at the icon: it can be viewed as an art of allegory, and it can be viewed as a spiritual or religious practice. As far as art is concerned, it is based on images. Using images we reflect that which is spiritual. Allegory is an illustration of a particular truth or event that has happened. Symbol is not a story that you hear, but what you actually see and immediately understand.
The ICONS, CROSSES, DIPTYCHS, andTRIPTYCHS produced by me are written in the ancient 15th century technique of egg-tempera on solid wood panels with 10 or more coats of gesso (gesso made from marble dust, chalk, and natural glue).
Considering the icon as a Holy Image, it is our belief that the icon should not contain anything synthetic or artificial. The materials include: solid wood board, linen fabric, natural gesso and glues, red clay, 24K gold leaf, natural ground semiprecious stones and raw pigments, egg yolk, honey, water, and linseed oil.
This is the oldest and most difficult technique of writing an icon - because besides the artistic training and knowledge of applying materials - it is first and foremost a spiritual process.
